1. Grid-style layouts. With the popularity of Pinterest soaring over the last few years, more business and consumer websites are being designed in the grid- style layout. The layout makes it easy for readers to skim through content and yet does not take a lot of space.
2. HTML 5 video players. While Flash still has its place in design, the future of Internet video is HTML5. In 2014, we are likely to see more websites opting to use HTML5 videos in favor of Flash videos.
3. Flat design elements. The flat UI pattern is becoming popular and is being used even on navigation menus and form inputs.
4. Personal portraits. Personal portrait websites will become more popular among people looking to showcase something about themselves.
5. Unique web copy. The @font-face declaration that enables designers to import font files hosted locally or in an external server will be used more in 2014. We will see more websites with unique fonts and icons thanks to the @font-face declaration.
6. Responsive design. As more people continue using smartphones to access the Internet, designers will have to rethink UX for devices. Responsive design will become a basic web design element.
7. Scrolling websites. The popularity of scrolling websites will continue increasing. Websites with horizontal scrolling, parallax scrolling and column based scrolling will feature more in 2014.
8. Minimalist navigation. We will see more focus on rolldowns, icons and navigations that shrink as a person starts to scroll down the page.
9. Quick user registration. Most startups require users to register before they can use their web applications. Long-detailed registration forms are quickly dying as developers opt to allow users to register using their social network credentials.
10. Micro UX. Offering custom micro user experience can give a website life and make it stand from the crowd. Micro UX focused on pleasing the senses will become popular in 2014.
